Bank of America Stadium

Bank of America Stadium is located in uptown Charlotte and is the home of the Carolina Panthers. The stadium opened in 1996 as Ericsson Stadium just in time for the Panthers 2nd season. During the 1st season the Panthers played their home games at Clemson University while the stadium was being built. The cost of the stadium was $248 million but public money was not used for construction. Personal Seat Licenses (PSL’s) were sold to finance the construction of the stadium in the mid 1990’s. This was the first project of this size to use PSL’s to finance construction costs. The stadium sits on thirty three acres of land along with three practice fields. The venue is an open air stadium with natural grass and has a seating capacity of 75,525. The lower level holds 22,716, the club level holds 11,321, the upper level holds 37,138 and the suites hold another 4,350. In 2004 the stadium became Bank of America stadium when Bank of America purchased the naming rights for the next 20 years.
There’s no doubt you’re in Panther country when you enter the stadium. The three main entrances to the stadium all have 2 large bronze panther statues just outside the entrances. Once inside the Carolina Panthers colors of black, silver and blue are prominent throughout the stadium. All of the seats are blue with the exception of the club level seats which are silver. This stadium was built to impress. The concourses are wide and roomy so they can easily handle the large crowds. The seats are wide and have cup and program holders. There are plenty of concessions and restrooms in the stadium. The ratio of concession stands is one for every 150 people. Lines are shorter and move quickly with concession stands being so plentiful.
In 2013 the city of Charlotte approved an $87.5 million agreement for stadium renovations. The renovations took place in 4 phases. In 2014 phase 1 of the renovations included 4 escalators that go to the upper levels and two 200’ X 56’ high definition video boards above the end zones. These screens are twice as big as the original ones. Phase 2 was completed in 2015 and it included renovations of the 151 suites giving them three rows of seating, fully retractable windows, additional televisions and other upgrades. In 2016 phase 3 brought added security, improved WIFI, new signage and improvements to concession stands on the upper level concourse. The last phase was completed in 2017 and it provided improvements on the lower level concourse which mirrored the upper level renovations and featured improvements to the 8 clubs lounges. It also included rebuilding the field and adding new irrigation and drainage systems.
The Carolina Panthers are the primary tenant of Bank of America Stadium but it has also hosted other events over the years. There have been regular season college football games played in the stadium. North Carolina State and the South Carolina Gamecocks have both played big games at the stadium. The annual Belk Bowl has been played in Bank of America Stadium since 2002. The stadium has also hosted the ACC championship game every year except one since 2010. The Rolling Stones have performed in the stadium and it has also hosted a Billy Graham Crusade.
Located near I-77 and I-277, the stadium is easy to access. There is plenty of parking in uptown Charlotte and within walking distance of the stadium. Charlotte also has the LYNX Blue Line light rail system that stops just 2 blocks from the stadium so you can park and ride if you don’t want to drive into town. The light rail runs 9.6 miles from the south into uptown with 15 stops including 7 park and ride locations along the way.
There are plenty of hotels and restaurants located within close proximity of the stadium. If you are coming into town for a game you can easily stay within walking distance of the stadium so you won’t have to drive anywhere for food and lodging unless you choose to do so. You can also enjoy the surroundings in the uptown area during your stay.
