Pittsburgh Steelers Franchise History

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC. The team was established in 1933 when they joined the NFL. Art Rooney was the man who started the franchise and the team has never been owned by anyone outside the Rooney family. When Art Rooney died his son Dan took over the team and he owned them from 1988 until he died in 2017. Dan’s son, Art Rooney II now has control of the team. The Steelers are known for having only a few coaches in the history of the team. When Chuck Noll became the head coach in 1969 the Steelers took a turn for the better. Under coach Noll the Steelers won four Super Bowls in the 1970’s. Bill Cowher took over the team in 1992 and led the Steelers to the playoffs every year in his first six seasons of coaching. The Steelers also won Super Bowl XL under coach Bill Cowher and became the first team to win 5 Super Bowls. Cowher left the team after the 2006 season because he wanted to spend more time with his family and Mike Tomlin took over as head coach. Tomlin has been the coach since 2007. In 2009 he led the Steelers to their 6th Super Bowl victory. At age 36, he was the youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl.

The Steelers make up one of the four teams in the AFC North. The other teams in the conference are the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers have had many super star players over the years. Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, “Mean” Joe Greene, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert and John Stallworth are just a few of the players that dominated the NFL in 1970’s. The list of players who have excelled as part of the team through the years goes on and on. The Steelers call Heinz Field home and the people of Pittsburgh are proud of their team and you can witness that every day when you go into the city.
