Miami Dolphins Franchise History

The AFL awarded Miami an expansion team in 1965. Lawyer Joseph Robbie and actor Danny Thomas founded the team and were awarded the franchise after Robbie originally wanted to start a team in Philadelphia. Together they paid $7.5 million for the franchise. Shortly after acquiring the franchise Robbie and Thomas held a contest in Miami to name the team. They received over 1,000 different names from almost 20,000 entries. The Dolphins was submitted by over 600 entries and was named the winner. Thomas sold his part of the team to Robbie shortly after the team was established. The team’s first head coach was George Wilson. He led the Dolphins through their first four seasons. In 1970, Don Shula was hired as head coach and he would remain the coach through 1995. In 1972 Shula led the Dolphins through the only undefeated season ever in the NFL. They won every regular season game, two playoff games and the Super Bowl that year. He also led them to three Super Bowls in a row, winning two of the three. The Dolphins also had many star players during those years such as Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, Mercury Morris and Dan Marino to name a few. In 1995 Jimmy Johnson was named as Shula’s successor. He would remain with the Dolphins through 1999. Dave Wannstedt took over for Johnson and stayed with the team through the middle of the 2004 season. Since then the Dolphins have gone through a number of coaches including Nick Saban who coached the Dolphins for two seasons.

Today the Dolphins call Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens their home. In the early years they played their home games in the Orange Bowl. This changed when Joe Robbie Stadium was completed in 1987. The stadium has had quite a few names over the years such as Pro Player Stadium, Land Shark Stadium, and Sun Life Stadium to name a few. It underwent major renovations and became Hard Rock Stadium in 2016. The Dolphins make up one of four teams in the AFC East. The other teams in the division are the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets.
