Jacksonville Jaguars Franchise History

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into the NFL as an expansion team for the 1995 season. There were two cities awarded expansion teams in 1993. Charlotte was awarded the first franchise in October of 1993 and Jacksonville was awarded the second franchise in November. St. Louis and Baltimore were heavily favored over Jacksonville to get the second franchise but the NFL owners voted 26 – 2 in favor of Jacksonville. The Panthers and the Jaguars were the first expansion teams to join the NFL since the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. The “Touchdown Jacksonville” ownership group led by Wayne Weaver (founder of Nine West) formed in 1989 and began pursuing an NFL franchise. They made an official bid in 1991 when the NFL announced its decision to bring two expansion teams into the league.

Tom Coughlin was awarded the head coaching job of the newly formed team. Coughlin remained head coach for the first eight seasons winning 68 regular season games. Jack Del Rio took over as head coach in 2003 and he led the team for nine years. He was fired in November of 2011 after accumulating a regular season record of 68 – 71. The Jaguars have had four other head coaches since Del Rio left the team in 2011. After the firing of Del Rio Wayne Weaver announced he was selling the team. Business man Shahid Khan purchased the team in 2012 for an estimated $770 million.

The Jaguars have only had one stadium they have called home since coming into the league in 1995. TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville is the home of the Jaguars. It was known as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium when the team entered the NFL and has changed name several times. It has also been called Alltel Stadium and EverBank Field before becoming TIAA Bank Field. The stadium also hosted Super Bowl XXXIX. The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of four teams in the AFC South. The other teams that make up the division are the Tennessee Titans, The Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans.
