Indianapolis Colts Franchise History

The Indianapolis Colts started their history in Baltimore, Maryland. The team was founded in 1953 when Carroll Rosenbloom was awarded an NFL franchise in the city of Baltimore. The league challenged Baltimore to sell 15,000 season tickets within six weeks before granting the franchise. They successfully sold the tickets in just four weeks and Rosenbloom was awarded the franchise. Rosenbloom hired Weeb Ewbank as head coach of the Colts in 1954 and he built a program that put the team over .500 by 1957 and they didn’t have a losing season for the next 14 years. The Colts had some spectacular players such as Johnny Unitas and many other Hall of Famers that brought NFL championships to the team in 1958, 1959 and in 1968. Don Shula replaced Ewbank in 1963 and he led the team to victory in the NFL Western Conference championships in 1964 and 1968. In 1970 the NFL merged with the AFL and Shula went to Miami. The Colts moved to the AFC East and won the division and Super Bowl V beating the Dallas Cowboys that year.

Carroll Rosenbloom owned the team until 1972 when he and Robert Irsay traded franchises. Irsay had owned the Los Angeles Rams and Rosenbloom took over the Rams and Irsay took over the Colts. After Unitas was traded to San Diego in 1973 the Colts suffered poor attendance and Irsay moved the team to Indianapolis in 1984. In the first thirteen years in Indianapolis the team went through seventeen starting quarterbacks and seven head coaches and made only three postseason appearances. Robert Irsay died in 1997 and his son Jim took over the team after his death. He is still the owner today. The Colts drafted Peyton Manning after the 1997 season and he was the starting quarterback for the next thirteen seasons. They made the playoffs eleven of those thirteen seasons winning the division eight times. Also, they were conference champions twice and won the Super Bowl for a second time (first time while in Indianapolis) in 2007. During the Peyton Manning era the Colts had three head coaches, Jim Mora, Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell. Manning was released in 2012 after suffering multiple neck injuries. The Colts drafted Andrew Luck that year and began rebuilding.

The Indianapolis Colts played in the Hoosier Dome when the team moved to Indianapolis. The stadium became known as the RCA Dome in 1994 when RCA paid $10 million for the naming rights for ten years. The team played twenty four seasons in the stadium until Lucas Oil Stadium replaced the RCA Dome in 2008. The Colts still call Lucas Oil Stadium home today. The Indianapolis Colts are one of four teams that make up the AFC South. The other teams are the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans.
