Houston Texans Franchise History
The Houston Texans joined the NFL in 2002. Majority owner Bob McNair and Steve Patterson founded Houston NFL Holdings in 1997 and pushed for a domed stadium in an attempt to persuade the NFL to return to Houston. The Houston Oilers relocated to Nashville and changed the name of the team to the Tennessee Titans earlier that year. The NFL needed to add another franchise to even out the teams. The other cities in the running were Los Angeles and Toronto. In 1999 the city of Houston won the battle and was awarded a franchise becoming the 32nd team in the NFL. McNair paid $700 million for the franchise. The team’s name was decided through an online survey. The names had been narrowed down to five names, Bobcats, Apollos, Stallions, Wildcatters and Texans before the survey. There were more than 65,000 responses to the online survey that lasted seven days. The name was officially announced during a rally in downtown Houston in September of 2000. Thousands of people attended the rally to support the new team.
Dom Capers was named the head coach of the team and he was with them through 2005. Gary Kubiak replaced Capers when he was fired in 2006 and that’s when the Texans began to turn around. In 2007, he led the team to their first winning season. He was with the team through 2013 but was fired before the season was over when the Texans lost eleven games in a row. Wade Phillips was given the head coach position on and interim basis. The new team struggled in the early years from 2002 through 2010 but in 2011 they made it to the playoffs for the first time and went on to win the division championship. They would win 3 more division championships in the next five years but as of 2018 they have yet to play in a conference championship.
The Texans played their first season in a brand new stadium. Reliant Stadium opened in August, 2002 with a capacity of nearly 72,000 and was the first stadium in the NFL to have a retractable roof. Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 and Super Bowl LI in 2017 were both played in the stadium. The stadium was renamed NRG Stadium in 2014. NRG Energy is the parent of Reliant Energy. The Texans make up one of four teams in the AFC South. The other teams are the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans.
