Dallas Cowboys Franchise History

The Dallas Cowboys were the NFL’s first expansion team since the collapse of the All-American Football Conference ten years prior. The franchise was awarded to Clint Murchison and John Murchison in 1960. The owner of the Washington Redskins, George Preston Marshall, tried to block Dallas from getting the franchise because the Redskins were the only team to represent the south in the NFL and he wanted to maintain his monopoly. After Clint Murchison and Beford Wynne purchased the rights to the Redskins fight song to use as ammunition Marshall backed off and Dallas was granted the franchise. This started the rivalry between the two teams that continues to this day. The new owners hired Tex Schramm and Tom Landry as general manager and head coach respectively of new team. The Cowboys were winless in their first season but gradually became a contender through the mid 1960’s. In 1966 and 1967 they played the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Championship Game both years. Green Bay won both games and went on to play in and win both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II.

After playing their first eleven seasons in the Cotton Bowl, the Cowboys moved to Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas in 1971, six weeks into the season. Roger Staubach became the starting quarterback in the second half of the season and the team became a dominating factor in the NFL. They won the last seven regular season games and went on to beat the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI that year. The Cowboys were quickly becoming “America’s Team” and continued to grow in popularity through the 70’s. They played in Super Bowl X against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976 but lost the game 21 – 17. In 1978 they won Super Bowl XII by defeating the Denver Broncos 27 – 10. They appeared again in Super Bowl XIII in a rematch against the Steelers but the result was the same as the first match-up. The Steelers won the game 35 – 31. Staubach announced his retirement after the 1979 season after suffering multiple concussions. H.R. “Bum” Bright purchased the Cowboys from Murchison in 1984 and sold the team to Jerry Jones in 1989. The first thing Jones did when he bought the team was to fire Tom Landry as head coach and bring in Jimmy Johnson as his replacement. The team drafted Troy Aikman in the same year but they finished the 1989 season with a 1 – 15 record. Johnson quickly turned the team around and they were back in contention by in 1991 and won their third and fourth Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993. Tensions grew between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones and Johnson announced his resignation shortly after their Super Bowl XXVIII victory. Barry Switzer replaced Johnson and led the Cowboys to their fifth Super Bowl win in 1995. Switzer resigned in 1998 and the Cowboys would go through four coaches through 2010 including Bill Parcells from 2003 to 2006.

In 2009 the Cowboys moved from Texas Stadium to the new AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The new stadium cost over $1 billion and is sometimes referred to as “Jerry’s World”. The Cowboys still call AT&T Stadium home today. The Dallas Cowboys make up one of four teams in the NFC East. The other teams are the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.
