Carolina Panthers Franchise History
The Carolina Panthers joined the NFL in 1995. Then owner Jerry Richardson founded the team and wanted to be sure the franchise represented both North Carolina and South Carolina. For that reason he named the team the Carolina Panthers even though they play their home games in Charlotte, NC. The team has had several head coaches since they joined the league. Dom Capers was the first coach of the Panthers and he led the team through the first four seasons. In 1999 George Seifert was brought in as head coach and he was with the team for 3 seasons. John Fox joined the Panthers in 2002 and was with the team for 9 seasons. He led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003 but they came away just short of a victory losing to the Patriots 32 – 29. Fox was released after the 2010 season and Ron Rivera took over the team in 2011. In 2018 Jerry Richardson sold the team to David Tepper. He was a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers before buying the Panthers. Tepper paid nearly $2.3 billion for the Panthers franchise and league owners unanimously approved the deal on May 22, 2018.
The Panthers are part of the NFC South along with the Atlanta Falcons, the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
